Frequently, an ornamental sheetmetal leader box is the most prominent feature at the cornice level of an old building. Sometimes called "scuppers," these sheetmetal boxes serve the practical function of providing surge capacity so that gutters and leaders don't back up and overflow in heavy rain. Because of the sculptural quality a leader box can impart, however, today they are often specified as much for architectural appearance as for practical reasons.
