Hand-carved wood, when shaped by the hand of a
master, possesses a charm and character that no machine can totally
duplicate. Thus, although hand-carved wood is relatively expensive,
demand has remained sufficiently high to support a small band of
traditionally trained carvers in the U.S. Hand-carved wood is in
demand primarily for mantels, panels, furniture, ornamental bands,
and architectural accents.
In addition to hand-carvings, there are also suppliers of
machine-carved wood that can furnish a lot of sculptural interest
for a fraction of the cost of hand carvings. And there are also
compo and other cast ornaments that when properly finished closely
replicate the look of carved wood.
This vendor list provides a good cross-section of the wood carvings
market today. It covers everything from classically trained wood
carvers who can create custom wood sculpture equal to anything
produced in the Renaissance, to machine-carvings and cast
"wood-look" ornaments that you can order from a catalog. This
Supplier List has been compiled from recent issues of TRADITIONAL
BUILDING magazine. Each issue of TRADITIONAL BUILDING contains 15 or
more such reports covering products and services used in
restoration, renovation, and historically inspired new construction.
