Tin Ceilings were introduced as an inexpensive way to cover cracked plaster ceilings. In the late 1800's, manufacturers of the ceiling panels began to press designs into the panels. At that point, the panels became very popular, as they create a dramatic decorative effect, are fireproof, resist moisture and are vermin proof.
