When you want to recapture the warmth, charm, and authenticity
of the Early American home, there is no substitute for wide pine
boards. Today, after an unbroken 350-year history of practical
use, these wide pine boards are hard to find. When they are used,
they greatly enhance the beauty and authenticity of antique-building
restoration and reproduction.
Over the years, our customers have expressed again and again this
same satisfaction with the timeless beauty of wide-pine flooring.
Craftsman Lumber has wide boards of Eastern white pine,
the same species used in the early Colonies. Usual widths are
from 6 to 22 in. (often available to 28 in.), and can be ordered
anywhere in between. Most of our customers request random widths
from 12 to 18 in. in a knotty grade, classed as #3 common (NELMA
Premium grade), with hard red knots (fewer and smaller knots)
available, as well.
The wood is kiln-dried in our own kilns to an 8% moisture content
(+/-2%), and machined in-house to our customers' specifications.
Our milling operation produces superior quality edges that leave
no gap between boards when installed properly. Other pine species
used for flooring include Southern yellow pine and Northern hard
pine (commonly used in old New England homes), both usually available
in 6- to 12-in. widths.
For those who love the look and dent-resistance of oak, we also
offer wide oak flooring in 6- to 10-in. widths. These clear red
oak boards are typically tongue-and-grooved. Oak boards from 12
to 18 in. wide are also available. Other wide hardwood flooring
available includes white oak, ash, maple, cherry, and walnut.
To reproduce the traditional beauty and informal charm of paneled
rooms, wide-pine boards can also be used for the walls. Options
include ship-lap, tongue-and-groove, featheredge, beading, and
other traditional profiles.
