GEORGE FISHMAN MOSAICS is a one-person studio specializing in pictorial images, rather than repeat patterns. While I have a particular fondness for the ancient mosaics, I also adapt the materials and techniques to contemporary styles. Frequently, I am called upon to translate my clients' ideas or sketches into mosaics, and I enjoy this collaboration. Among my projects are fountains, pools, floor medallions, niche panels and sculpture for cruise lines, residences, resorts and churches. For very large projects I enlist the assistance of skilled collaborators. Among the subjects I have treated are land and seascapes, skiing, dog sledding, diving, sailing, tropical dancers, florals, wildlife, portraits and religious themes. Specific imagery for this original custom artwork is developed through conversations with my client/collaborators. We look at examples of my previous work, client photos and historical subjects. I do a lot of internet research as well as my own photography for reference images. I then execute a series of sketches that lead to the final design, approved before the mosaic artwork begins. The completed mosaics can be completely mounted and grouted on panels here in the studio, crated and shipped. These may then be hung or installed like thin slabs. Alternatively, I can provide a temporary clear flexible film mount for thin-setting on site. In either case, distance is not an impediment; I have work in eight states and overseas. Some designs and techniques are more labor-intensive than others; also material costs range significantly. For each project there is an approach that best suits its theme, budget and schedule. Larger projects can take six months or more to schedule and complete, so it's important to begin the process early. The beauty of a mosaic will then endure for lifetimes.
