Goodwin Heart Pine Company recovers from Southern river
bottoms the original-growth heart-pine and heart-cypress logs
that were lost during transport over a century ago. Owner George
Goodwin and his crew don scuba gear and retrieve each sunken log
by hand. These "sinkers" have been preserved by the
cool water in their oxygen-free sanctuary, maintaining the heavy,
dense heart of the wood in perfect condition -- full of pizzazz
and rich in color. Goodwin mills this river-recovered timber
into magnificent flooring, paneling, cabinetry, stairparts, and
architectural mouldings for your fine homebuilding needs.
River-Recovered Heart Pine
The "Heart of Longleaf" Pine found by America's first
European settlers was declared the "King's wood" for
shipbuilding because of its durability and rich red tones. It
was used to build homes all over Colonial America and Europe,
many of which still stand today. In the 19th century, heart pine
provided joists for industrial America's factories and timber
for bridges, warehouses, railroad cars, and wharves. This magnificent
resource was depleted in a few short decades over a century ago.
Today, the demand for original-growth heart pine is considerable,
as interest has heightened in renovating historic buildings.
River-Recovered Heart Cypress
Heart-cypress timber, from the bald cypress tree, is a warm red-tan
color that complements heart pine perfectly. Through centuries
of adaptation, bald cypress has developed an inherent resistance
to destructive forces of nature not found in other woods. River-Recovered
Heart Cypress also is available from Goodwin as lumber,
paneling, and flooring.
Legacy Heart Pine
Goodwin now offers Legacy Heart Pine. Like our
river-recovered products, this select salvaged wood comes in a
100% heart face. A few character nail holes assure that these
reclaimed and remilled antique boards have already played a part
in history. After all, George Washington's original heart-pine
floors in Mount Vernon are more than 250 years old and still in
fine condition!
