ALAN LEQUIRE is
a sculptor who has become well-known in his native southeast for
his public commissions and sensitive portraiture. LeQuire works
in virtually all sculpture materials, both direct carving and
casting in his own foundry. He has oompleted a number of architectural,
collaborative and site-specific projects since he began accepting
commissions back in 1981.
One of his most recent projects is a $2
million Renaissance-style fountain of bronze and stone to be sited
at the traffic circle to be installed at the entrance to Music
Row in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Spirit of Music will include dancing figures measuring twice
life-size, and fountain jets spraying 50 feet in the air. Around
the lip of the fountain there will be four clusters of sculpted,
life-size figures representing classical, country, jazz and gospel
music. "It's meant to be an exuberant, celebratory reminder
of our greatest resources - water and human creativity through
music," says LeQuire.
"Like the classical and Renaissance
artists to whom he has directly apprenticed himself, Alan LeQuire
believes that the human figure is the single artistic subject
to which all viewers inevitably respond. Like his forebears he
is specially concerned with the relation of humanity to the world
it inhabits. For him, the world is meaningful, and the human
figure serves as the primary carrier of meaning. Because of this
inner quality as much as its outward appearance, his work is
a radical departure from most contemporary art. Monumental, miniature,
or life-size, Alan LeQuire's sculpture is on the human scale,
a work made by and intended for human beings."
