A message from John C. Stortz: Our tool company was founded in 1853 by the original John Stortz, who was a toolmaker from the Black Forest area of Germany. He docked in Philadelphia in 1849 and within 4 years had started his own tool business at 210 Vine Street, the same location where the company is presently situated. Interestingly enough, the first ship that John booked passage on was to New Orleans but fortunately, he missed its departure. That ship was lost at sea, never to be heard from again. Today, the company is owned and operated by John C. Stortz, who represents the 4th generation of Stortz family ownership.Our commitment continues to be to provide the highest quality industrial hand tools possible to the roofing, masonry, shipbuilding, painting and cooperage trades.
