Andy deGruchy writes: The repointing of a masonry building is not rocket science, but incorrect interpretation of the problem, and/or hastily deciding what materials should be used to make the appropriate repairs, can result in unsightly, damaging and often irreversible "fixes" that can ruin historic buildings overnight. New mortars chosen to repoint with are very frequently incompatible to the original lime putty mortar which was used to build most buildings built before 1940. A new repointing mortar must be durable and yet also be compatible with the original bedding mortar. deGruchy Masonry provides a thorough masonry restoration plan which will revive these intended details which others might lose. We provide our service to churches and historic landmarks throughout the United States. We team with qualified architectural conservators and professionals who will translate a conditions study of your building into a working and appropriate specification as needed. We employ good specialty trade companies which are local to your area to perform the work. The experienced masonry firms in your locale may have great skills but only lack part of a proper design and repair interpretation or a proper repair materials selection. Our role as your primary contractor is to form the bridge which specifically improves these aspects of the work. We validate a local masonry contractor's experience. We invest in a few of their key workers by sending them to Virginia Lime Work's 2-3 day practical trade workshops.
