Winners of the 2005 Competition
The fourth annual Palladio Awards design competition has recognized 10 architectural firms for outstanding work in traditional design for commercial/institutional and residential projects. The awards are sponsored by Traditional Building and Period Homes magazines and are named in honor of Andrea Palladio, the Renaissance architect who created modern architecture for his time while
drawing on past models for inspiration.
“This was our largest competition to date, in terms both of the number of entries and the scope of projects,” says Traditional Building and Period Homes Editor in Chief Michael Carey. “We have winning projects from New York City to Switzerland and from Nova Scotia to Florida – the variety and quality of the work is breathtaking.”
Four firms won for commercial/institutional projects:
Restoration & Renovation: Einhorn Yaffee Prescott Architecture & Engineering P.C. of Boston, MA, for the Traditional Building of Widener Memorial Library at Harvard University, a Horace Trumbauer Beaux Arts building completed in 1915.
Adaptive Re-Use and/or Sympathetic Addition: Schooley Caldwell Associates of Columbus, OH, for the adaptive re-use of a 1930s Moderne office building in Columbus, which became the Ohio Judicial Center.
New Design & Construction under 30,000 sq.ft.: David Mayernik Ltd. of South Bend, IN, for the design of the 11,635-sq.ft. M. Crist Fleming Library at The American School in Switzerland in Collina d’Oro, Canton Ticino, Switzerland.
New Design & Construction over 30,000 sq.ft.: Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York, NY, for the design of the 65,000-sq.ft. K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre and Harriet Irving Botanical Garden at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
Six firms took top honors in residential categories:
Restoration & Renovation: Archer & Buchanan Architecture, Ltd. of West Chester, PA, for the Alan H. Reed Estate in Wayne, PA.
Adaptive Re-Use and/or Sympathetic Addition: Barnes Vanze Architects of Washington, DC, for a 1,845-sq.ft. addition to a 1918 farmhouse in The Plains, VA.
New Design & Construction under 5,000 sq.ft.: Cooper Johnson Smith Architects, Inc., of Tampa, FL, for the design of
a 3,740-sq.ft. beach house in Rosemary Beach, FL.
New Design & Construction over 5,000 sq.ft.: Albert, Righter & Tittmann Architects, Inc., of Boston, MA, for the design of a 6,200-sq.ft. residence in Concord, MA.
Exterior Spaces: Gardens & Landscapes: Voith & Mactavish Architects and Victoria Steiger Garden Design, both of Philadelphia, PA, for a Philadelphia residential garden featuring a water-lily pond, fountain wall and a connecting loggia.
Multi-Unit: Dewitt Tishmann Architects and BKSK Architects, both of New York, NY, for
the design of the 92,000-sq.ft. mixed-use Hudson Street Condominiums in New York City.
The winning firms will receive an engraved architectural cast-bronze trophy, designed and custom cast for this competition by Historical Arts & Casting, Inc., of West Jordan, UT, during an awards dinner at the Traditional Building Conference and Exhibition in Philadelphia, PA, April 28, 2005. The winners will also present their projects as part of the
Conference and the projects will be published in Traditional Building and Period Homes as well as the websites.
